Camp Wilderness 2010

13 Scouts and 4 adults (and Serena!) from Troop 656 camped at Camp Wilderness last week.  We were the first session for the year, and it was an active one.  We stayed at the Fox campsite, which is close to the main buildings, and also has the Fox Building classroom on the site, too.   Oddly, none of our Scouts took any waterfront or fishing classes, which was OK because the weather was not very cooperative.  I rained multiple times during camp, and on Thursday, at the time when Wadena was hit by a tornado, we had been evacuated to the Nature building, which was the third evacuation for the day.  I was quite proud of our Scouts when they took it upon themselves and just about spontaneously started cleaning the Nature building following the departure of the rest of the troops.  They received some special recognition during the closing campfire for this act.  A special thank-you to our adult leaders who spent the week at camp: Faye, Ennet, and Bryan, - and thanks to Ron and Allan for for helping to drive.  Here are some of the videos of  camp:

Winter Camp 2011 Yields Two "Zero Heroes"

We had a fabulous weekend at Camp Wilderness.  The temperatures were cool, and the snow was deep and heavy. On most compacted paths, if you strayed, you'd fall into snow slightly higher than your knee! We stayed in the Cub Scout Camp at the bottom floor of the Scheels building.  It was a little tight at times, but the guys got along great!  We were the only Troop at the camp that cooked its own food, and some of the patrols were quite ambitious.  The Panther patrol brought along a few extra meals, just to be sure.  (Its rumored that Colin went home with Sunday night's dinner, consisting of a large ham already cooked in a crock pot).

The sliding hills were in reasonable condition, but steady snow at night and during the day occluded the solar panels on one of the hills, leaving it dark that evening.

Hawley Scouts Consider Takeout Pizza

Last weekend it was pretty cool to camp close to Hawley.  One of the seriously hidden gems for our council is the Tom Brantner Memorial Campground.  Its a locked site, and only a Scout site.  It's close enough to Hawley that we could have ordered Jimmy's Pizza!  We didn't do that, but we did do some other strange things:  we brought enough equipment so Troy Sperr could show us his GeoCaching Powerpoint Presentation.  It was pretty cool, and the Scouts are pretty psyched to get out and do some geocaching.  We also invited the Webelos, and a few showed up to get an idea of some of the things we do in Scouts.

A few other things happened at the campout:  Cody fell into a stream up to his waist while concentrating on his GPS, Brock B. completed the Wilderness Survival Merit Badge by building a shelter and spending the night in it, Andy went to bed when his Mom told him to, and we had an awesome fire.  A big thank you to CJ at the Hawley Subway for supplying coffee the following morning.

We give this campground 5 stars, and we look forward to returning next year for an even longer stay.
