Camp Wilderness 2010

13 Scouts and 4 adults (and Serena!) from Troop 656 camped at Camp Wilderness last week.  We were the first session for the year, and it was an active one.  We stayed at the Fox campsite, which is close to the main buildings, and also has the Fox Building classroom on the site, too.   Oddly, none of our Scouts took any waterfront or fishing classes, which was OK because the weather was not very cooperative.  I rained multiple times during camp, and on Thursday, at the time when Wadena was hit by a tornado, we had been evacuated to the Nature building, which was the third evacuation for the day.  I was quite proud of our Scouts when they took it upon themselves and just about spontaneously started cleaning the Nature building following the departure of the rest of the troops.  They received some special recognition during the closing campfire for this act.  A special thank-you to our adult leaders who spent the week at camp: Faye, Ennet, and Bryan, - and thanks to Ron and Allan for for helping to drive.  Here are some of the videos of  camp:

Scouts show off their excellent outdoor cooking skills to Miss Hawley Rodeo

Cody, Luke, and Colin show Miss Hawley Rodeo, Stephanie J. how to cook a steak to perfection! (The large black cauldron contains boiling oil)

We'd like to thank all our volunteers, and all who came and enjoyed steak with us. Thank you for your support for Scouting in Hawley. This is our major fund-raising event for our Scouts every year, and it goes a long way to help fund our scouting activities. Scouts share the gains from these events to pay for our annual trip to Summer Camp at Camp Wilderness, our Winter Camp, and a few other activities.  We also did something new this year, and we sold popcorn and cotton candy at the Hawley Rodeo grounds.

Pitchfork Fondue Friday, June 11th 5-7PM

Come to the Community Building in Hawley to get your very own steak that's been prepared in a cauldron of boiling oil. You can get a ticket for the meal for $12 at the door, or you can request an advance ticket for $10 by calling Herb at 701-371-3874. We'll see you there!

Scouts work on Medicine Merit Badge

We've never worked on the Medicine Merit Badge, and we're very appreciative for our counselor, Katie Hall. The Scouts "learned a lot" from her presentation. Scouts had accomplished the volunteer portion of the merit badge by participating in the Feed My Starving Children event in Hawley earlier in the month (see previous articles). Katie, an internal medicine doctor working in Fargo, brought some cool equipment and the Scouts were able to get some hands-on experience with a few of the items.

Feed My Starving Children Event in Hawley a tremendous success

Hawley Scouts provided assistance with logistics, planning, and cleanup of the Feed My Starving Children mobile packing event which took place April 29-May 1. Scouts assisted in the movement of tables from the community building, with the setup of tables, lots of different jobs during the event, clean up, recycling, and lots of things in between. Scout parents, of course, were also there to assist, and even provided their time as skilled labor - such as Ron Aakre who ran the forklift!
I worked with Colin for a while on the pallet packing - basically the final step as the food is loaded on the truck. There's an interesting way that he showed me how to strap the pallets, and conceptually I can understand, but really, I don't know what we were doing. Thanks Colin!
