January 20th to 22nd, 2012

Departure: Meet at the Community Building in Hawley at 4:30 PM.  We will be rolling shortly afterwards.  We will have the Scout trailer which we will use to carry our cargo.  We stop at BK or Subway in Park Rapids for dinner.  Scouts should bring $$ for their own food in Park Rapids.

Food: We will be eating at the dining center at the camp.  No need to bring meals.

Coming up or departing at a different time: That is absolutely fine!  The directions to Camp are on the back.  It takes about 75 minutes to get to Camp Wilderness from Hawley.  You can also just come up for the day on Saturday.

This is Camp Wilderness Drive,

Returning: We clean up and depart first thing Sunday morning.  The Scouts phone home on the way home to alert you to their return time.

REACH, a set on Flickr.

Troop 656 was happy to help out REACH in Hawley in removing and delivering excess inventory to Fargo this November. The Scouts moved a lot of boxes with the Cub Scout trailer and we also listened to the director, Jodi Neumann, who discussed the mission and method of REACH. Good job guys!

The Scouts decided to build on an alternate theme to our rodeo weekend theme by providing steak on a stick. The flavor was absolutely stunning, and if you missed one, you missed a lot! We also provided hot buttered corn produced by one of our local farmers. We’re proud of the work we did, and we had a good time doing it, and we learned a lot!

We departed bright and early from the Community Building in Hawley and journeyed to a place 5 miles east of Twin Valley on the Wild Rice River. We canoed for the next 6.5 hours. It was quite an eventful day, and our regrets were that we didn’t have enough cameras to capture some of the action. We had to portage multiple times, moving canoes through trees, often elevating and sinking them to pass under fallen logs. It was a great time, and we’re looking forward to the next time on the water.

Here are more pictures from wilderness. Some are Thursday night when we participated in the Iron Many competition. We fielded teams for the Junior and the Senior divisions. Other pictures from Friday include many taken during Merit Badge Classes, breaking down tents, our camp project in our site, and the final campfire. We’ll continue to add as Ennet’s and Dave’s pictures are added. Enjoy!

Summer Camp 2011, a set on Flickr.

What would camp be without a little rain? At least we have good drainage at the IOWA campsite and Camp Wilderness this year. I made a quick visit this evening with Brogan and I was pleased at what I saw. Our Scouts were unified and proud. They were all working together cooperatively under the leadership of our Senior Patrol Leader Colin and two former SPLs, Paris and Brock. Today our troop was quite proud to attain a score of 99 on our campsite from our commissioner. I took many photos. There was a pretty good game of ultimate frisbee going on, as well as some pretty good work on the campfire which was later doused by a heavy rain. Our Troop was Super Troop today, and honor that our Scouts took quite seriously. Ennet and Dave took some good pictures as our Scouts raised our Troop Flag this morning at the full camp ceremony. Way to go!

Couple of notes on the pictures: the blue tarp is up as a windbreak, many shirts and towels are hanging to dry inside the tarp. The bright light is the pressure lantern, which the Scouts often used to to warm their hands, what else — the girl is Colin’s sister, Serena, who can throw a pretty mean frisbee.

If you click on one of the photos, you’ll go to the Flickr site which will show all the photos in this set.
